The cannabinoid known as CBD, that is found in cannabis and hemp, has become all the rage throughout the nation in the past few years. But what is the cause of its somewhat sudden rise in popularity in the United States? Well, the growing evidence of the potent medicinal qualities that cannabis displays against a variety of different health conditions is probably the main “culprit” for this sudden change in the United States’ attitude with this amazing plant. This is especially when it comes to medical marijuana.

CBD, also known by its proper scientific name “cannabidiol”, is known as the primary medicinal “powerhouse” molecule. It is found in all forms of cannabis, hemp and medical marijuana. While CBD’s cousin THC is more well known (most likely as a result of the fact that THC is the cannabinoid responsible for the characteristic marijuana psychoactive effect or “high”), CBD has been found to be the primary active ingredient in cannabis that is responsible for almost all of the beneficial, homeopathic and medicinal qualities that this plant provides.

CBD has proven to be a very effective compound at helping control a variety of different illnesses and medical conditions. This is directly due to controlled studies where CBD has been found to be extremely effective when being used as an anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anticonvulsant, anti-anxiety, anti-psychotic, neuroprotective and/or pain-killing agent.

One of the many illnesses that CBD is exceptional at helping control is epilepsy. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that is characterized by repeated and recurring episodes of convulsions, loss of coordination or consciousness and/or other sensory disturbances. CBD epilepsy treatments have proven to work quite well primarily due to its strong anticonvulsant and neuroprotective properties.

However, if you have been a patient suffering from epilepsy in the United States, there have historically been only a few semi-effective and legal treatments available to help control your recurring episodes. And most of these options didn’t work as well as CBD. Only recently have legal CBD therapy options, such as CBD supplements made from hemp or medical marijuana products (if they are legal in your state or jurisdiction), been available on the market.

However, it seems like the options available to sufferers of epilepsy are opening up! In a recent decision that occurred in June of 2018, the Food and Drug Administration (also known as the FDA) approved the use of a new prescription CBD medication to control certain severe and rare forms of epilepsy. This newly approved CBD epilepsy treatment medication is known as Epidiolex and, for right now, it is only available to epilepsy patients who are suffering from forms of the disease known as a Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. These forms of epilepsy are quite severe and primarily affect children.

The CBD that is found in Epidiolex is derived directly from cannabis plants but is completely free and devoid of the THC cannabinoid. This means that any user of this new CBD prescription will not have to worry about feeling any type of incidental “high” or psychoactive effect when they take their seizure-controlling medication. This is quite an important feature of Epidiolex because it completely negates the main unwanted side effect of feeling ‘high” that is associated with consuming any type of cannabis derivative.

This feature of being completely THC-free is a quality that is shared between Epidiolex and the CBD supplements we sell at Black Bear Hemp.
